Infectious disease cleanup
After a serious illness at home, especially one that involved blood, vomit or other fluids, some families want the home disinfected before anyone moves back in.

What disinfection can and cannot do
A disinfectant works against the germs its label names, at the strength and contact time the label sets. The EPA publishes lists of registered products by germ, such as List S for bloodborne pathogens and List K for C. difficile spores (EPA).
Ask the company which germ it is treating for, which product it will use and why. If you know the illness, tell them. If a doctor or the health department gave you instructions, follow those first and share them with the company.
When a death was involved
Rhode Island's state medical examiners take charge of deaths suspected to come from an infectious disease that may be an emerging infection or a bioterrorism event, as well as deaths from accidents, suicide and homicide (RIDOH). In those cases, wait for their release before anyone cleans.
For other deaths from illness, When someone dies at home covers the usual order of events.
When you are ready, one call is enough
You will speak with an independent biohazard cleanup company that works around Providence. Say what happened in your own words, ask what they would do and how they price it, then decide. Nothing is agreed until you say yes.
