Situation

Blood and bodily fluid cleanup

A bad fall, a serious cut, an illness that came on fast. Not every situation involves the police, but blood and other bodily fluids still need careful cleaning.

Why it is more than a spill

Hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV can be carried in blood. That is why employers whose staff may be exposed to blood must have a written exposure control plan that covers protective clothing and equipment (OSHA).

Blood also travels. On a carpeted floor it reaches the pad and the subfloor. On wood it runs into the joints between boards. On stairs it finds the gaps behind treads and risers.

Disinfectants: what to ask

The Environmental Protection Agency publishes lists of registered disinfectants by the germs they work against. List S covers bloodborne pathogens: HIV and hepatitis B and C (EPA).

Ask the company which product it will use, whether that product is on List S, and how long it stays wet on the surface. Each label sets a contact time, and the product only works as labeled if that time is met.

Tell the company

  • Which rooms, and what the floors are: carpet, wood, tile or vinyl.
  • Whether furniture, a mattress or bedding was involved.
  • Whether anyone in the home is ill, and with what, if you know.
  • Whether there is a unit below or next door in the same building.

When you are ready, one call is enough

You will speak with an independent biohazard cleanup company that works around Providence. Say what happened in your own words, ask what they would do and how they price it, then decide. Nothing is agreed until you say yes.
